Vers nonsensiques (1)

I have already discussed a “comic strip” by George Du Maurier, The Egg Poacher: A Tale of Country Life, which appeared in Punch in 1869. A few years later Du Maurier was to prove his literary talent by producing a series of 32 limericks in Franglais, which were published 4 to a page in Punch from March to May 1877. Eight days of good reading and an opportunity to brush up your French.

Thanks go to Bob Turvey who supplied the information to locate the limericks in an interesting article on Rudyard Kipling’s limericks (The Kipling Journal, 305, March 2003, pp. 8-20): more good reading for the weekend.

George Du Maurier, in Punch, 10 March 1877, p. 98.
