The second of the three limericks at the end of the new-found proof copy of Edward Lear’s A Book of Nonsense, second edition.
There was a young Person of Ghent
Who went out to slide on the Trent
The Ice was so wet She quickly upset
Which collapsed this young person of Ghe[nt]

Hmmmm, I don’t think either the 3 illustrations or the writing is Lear’s, did anyone else have a theory as to who might be the author? Very interesting! While I’m here, have you ever seen an illustration of a cow with good horns in any of Lear’s Italian landscapes? I have just come across a Stock Book entry pre 1851 for a pair of polished horns from Italy given to the 13th Earl of Derby by Lear. We can’t for certain say they are the same horns, but we do have a pair on display, I can forward a photograph if of any interest. Very best wishes, Clem Fisher (National Museums Liverpool, UK)
