An Unpublished Limerick (2)

The first of the three limericks at the end of the new-found proof copy of Edward Lear’s A Book of Nonsense, second edition.

Again, the picture looks Learesque to me, but the handwriting does not.

There was a young Lady of Jadda
Who absurdly fell in with an Adder
She said “Do you sing” he replied “No I sting[“]
Which shut up this young Lady of Jadda

Here is the limerick bound at the beginning of the volume.

Next limerick.

  1. Anthony Madrid's avatar Anthony Madrid says:

Transcript should read: Who absurdly fell in with an Adder

    —not “and”—

Meanwhile, transcript from yesterday should read: When they said “dont you shave”

    —not “sahave”—
