Edward Lear, Study of a red and yellow macaw, Macrocercus Aracanga.
Pencil. 12.3 x 11cm (4 13/16 x 4 5/16in).
Provenance
Anon. sale, Sotheby’s, London, 15 July 1999, lot 127.
Private collection, UK.
When offered at Sotheby’s, it has been suggested by Vivien Noakes that this study relates to the group of working drawings for Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae (Department of Printing and Graphic Arts, The Houghton Library, Harvard University). This drawing, which shows Lear concentrating particularly on the feathers, would have been executed in the Zoological Society of London between 1830 and 1832.
