1 Response to Edward Lear, Amalfi (Melfi?), Italy (September 1867)

  1. Benes, Miroslava M says:

    Dear Marco,

This lovely work by Edward Lear is actually of Melfi, in the province of Potenza, in the region of Basilicata in southern Italy. The inscription by Lear does read “Melfi,” not Amalfi, and proof is in the very geometric forms and towers of the castle on the hill of Melfi, which Lear represents. No sea is apparent, as at Amalfi. I attach a photo of the town of Melfi with the castle on the hill.

    With very best wishes,
